BelongWell4Life Certificate in Community Building

Become a Certified Community Builder

A year of learning and doing, built around one real community: yours. You learn the science of belonging and the craft of community, practise it with others, and show what you built.

The first cohort begins in 2027. Register your interest now, and we will let you know as soon as enrolment opens. While you wait, you are welcome to explore and take any of our courses.

Who it is for

  • Students and mentors who want a residence, society or class to feel like home
  • Team leaders and HR people who want a workplace where people belong
  • Faith leaders, coaches and club organisers
  • Neighbours who want to know the people next door
  • Anyone who keeps finding themselves at the centre of a group

What you can do at the end

  • Hold conversations where people feel heard, even when they disagree
  • Design and host gatherings people remember
  • Hold a group well through difficulty
  • Turn gatherings into a community with shared values, a warm welcome and bridges between groups
  • Lead your community in making a real difference, where it lives and beyond, wisely and inclusively
  • Keep it alive with rhythm and rituals, and hand it on

The year

One step at a time

Months 1 and 2

Become a builder and talk well. Choose the community you will build or renew.

Months 3 and 4

Gather well: design and host your first gatherings.

Months 5 and 6

Hold the space: lead your group through its first difficult moments.

Months 7 and 8

Build a community: values, welcome, small circles, bridges, asking and giving.

Months 9 and 10

Make a difference together: choose a change your community takes on, and act on it.

Months 11 and 12

Make it last: rhythm, a ritual of your own design, new leaders and renewal.

Every month you meet your practice partner, a fellow candidate, to practise and reflect together. Your weekly log, your portfolio and the full Advisor keep you on track, and we review and sign off three skills you show in your own community.

Step 0: Become a builder

The builder's pledge

Every Certified Community Builder begins the year with these promises: one for each step of the path.

I will try, every day, to:

  1. 0See myself in others, and treat every person with dignity, whoever they are.
  2. 1Listen so that I can hear, and ask after the people who matter to them, not only the person in front of me.
  3. 2Bring people together, and welcome the one at the edge of the room.
  4. 3Hold the space when things are hard: ask before I judge, and stay when it gets difficult.
  5. 4Build with others, not for them: decide together, so that no one is left behind.
  6. 5Make a difference together, starting where I am, with what we have.
  7. 6Keep giving and receiving, so that what we build outlasts us.

Inspired by South Africa's Ubuntu Pledge.
