Why now
The most human skill there is
Connection keeps people well. Gathering people is a skill. And in an age of quick, artificial everything, it is a skill worth more every year.
Connection keeps people well
Across 148 studies and more than 300,000 people, those with stronger social relationships had about a 50% higher likelihood of survival over the study periods.

The World Health Organization's Commission on Social Connection estimates that about one in six people worldwide is affected by loneliness.

Friendship takes time together
It takes roughly 50 hours together to go from acquaintance to casual friend, about 90 to become a friend, and more than 200 to become a close friend. Time spent together in leisure counts most.

Community builders create the places and rhythms where those hours happen.
Belonging grows where there is room for it
In a study across 22 colleges with nearly 27,000 students, a short belonging exercise helped students from groups who had real opportunities to belong on their campus. The message works when the community makes room.

Human work in an age of AI
Technology can schedule, remind and reach. What it cannot do is bring people into one room, welcome the newcomer by name, hold a hard conversation or mark a new beginning together. That is the work of a community builder.
From belonging to making a difference
Agency is the belief that what we do matters: we can try, we can keep going, and we can imagine something better. Its strongest form is shared, a group's belief that together it can change its world. That belief grows in communities, and communities grow stronger when they act on it.

The big I and the small We
Martin Seligman connects much of today's loneliness and low mood to "the big I and the small We": fewer of the families, neighbours and groups that once caught people when they fell. Rosa Parks put the remedy simply: change comes when people act "on a community level".

Belonging is built. Someone has to build it.
